Sofia Poznansky is a journalist. She recently completed a Fulbright in Akhaltsikhe, Georgia, where she reported on ethnic minorities and their relationship to Russia and the West. She lived in the mountainous Samtskhe–Javakheti region and assisted the English faculty at the local university.
Prior she worked at The New York Times where she contributed reporting to a range of desks, including the International, Metro, and Obituary teams. Before joining the Times, Sofia lived and worked in Israel in two distinct regions of the country. There she taught at local elementary schools, her students ranged from unruly 6th graders to displaced children from Eritrea and Ukraine.
A graduate from the University of Houston’s Honors college, Sofia worked as a Research Assistant for the University’s Special Collections department. There she worked on an archival project about a student civil rights organization called the African American for Black Liberation (AABL). Sofia collected, analyzed, and wrote on large sums of historical data.
